Sunroom Design Options

A cozy sunroom design in Okemos

Customize your new space. We will help you design and install the perfect sunroom for your home, no matter what use you have in mind.

Before you design your sunroom, it's a good idea to decide what you'll use it for and what will offer the best value for your investment. When adding on to your home, consider these options:

  • Seasonal use: Sunrooms can be open, three seasons, or four seasons. Open porches are completely weather-dependent. Three-season sunrooms include insulated glass but lack heating or cooling, so extreme temperatures can make the area uncomfortable. Finally, four-season sunrooms are insulated and include their own heating and cooling systems, making them part of the house.
  • Sunroom lighting: If you want to use your sunroom in the evening, strategically placed accent and track lighting will make it more enjoyable. Skylights are also an essential addition if you choose an opaque ceiling.
  • Heating & cooling systems: Four-season sunrooms naturally require heating and cooling. Electric floor heating can be a fantastic way to keep your floors comfortable, while fireplaces are also very popular in sunrooms. Ceiling fans and windows can be sufficient for cooling, though air conditioning can be added to keep your sunroom cool and relaxing.
  • Finishing touches: Complete your sunroom design by adding wicker furniture and sweet-smelling flowering plants, and using acrylic fabrics that resist fading in the sun. For fancier finishing touches, you may want to consider customizing your sunroom further with a fountain, a hot tub, or even a spa enclosure. Whether you're creating a home office, a playroom for your children, or you just want a place to read and relax, don't forgo the little details that make the space your own.

Sunroom Styles

4 season sunrooms are designed so they can be heated or cooled and enjoyed in most weather conditions. With protection from sun, snow, wind and rain, you can enjoy the outdoors from the comfort of your own home year round.

Three season sunrooms (also known as patio rooms) are the most popular type of addition. They provide a space to relax, dine, or entertain with friends without worrying about weather.

Screen rooms give you a place to relax when the weather is nice, while staying protected from pesky bugs and mosquitoes.

Enclosed porches are installed with an existing porch or patio cover. If you want added protection from weather and insects, an enclosed porch might be the solution you're looking for. We can install walls of glass and screen under your existing roof so you can enjoy the outdoors more often.

Features of our sunrooms:

  • Fully integrated sliding windows and doors specially designed for sunrooms
  • Argon-filled, energy-efficient "Low-E" double pane insulated tempered All Climate glass standard on all sunroom windows and sunroom doors
  • Fully engineered for strength and thermal efficiency
  • Can be built to accommodate slope, eliminating the need to build a deck or patio
  • Full glass views available in all sunroom styles
  • 4-3/16 inch wall system in all vinyl sunrooms
  • Meet or exceed snow and wind loads for residential building code compliance throughout North America
  • Available in white and desert sand colors
  • Built-in electric raceways - no wires or fasteners show in a BetterLiving sunroom!

Sunroom Energy Efficiency

At Infinity Home Improvement, we recommend installing double-paned (also called double-glazed) windows for your sunroom. Double-glazed, insulated sunroom windows have twice the insulating R-value (R-4), helping save energy in your home.

Thermal breaks and insulation should also be integrated into your frame, and all glass should be Low-E coated to protect it from UV rays in the summer while also adding insulation value in the winter. To conserve energy in your home, you may also want to consider isolating your sunroom from the rest of the housing envelope. Having a sealed door to the sunroom, rather than an open entry, will help conserve energy and is essential in three-season sunrooms.
